The festival’s mission is to develop cooperation between Russia and African countries
in the sphere of arts, media, education, and creative industries. It has built a platform for
cultural dialogue and presented African art as a significant part of the global cultural
process.
The festival opened at the Illusion Cinema with the premiere of the movie My Africa,
which was filmed in South Africa. It tells the story of a Russian family residing on the
southern continent. Starring: Irina Rozanova, Denis Shvedov, Ravshana Kurkova, and
Alena Babenko, as well as South African actors Nat Ramabulana, Zack Wastie, Zandile
Lujabe, and Sisekho Velelo.
The program showcased a wide range of contemporary African cinema, from the auteur
films to winners of major international festivals. The festival’s main venue was the
cinema hall of the Engineering Building of the Tretyakov Gallery. The audience had an
opportunity to watch such films as Katanga. Dance of The Scorpions (Burkina Faso),
Ancestral Visions of the Future (Lesotho), How to Build a Library (Kenya), Timpi Tampa
(Senegal), Everybody Loves Touda (Morocco), and others.
The Ambassador of Senegal to Russia, Stéphane Sylvain Sambou, attended the
opening ceremony and noted the importance of cultural exchange. Among the festival’s
participants were representatives of the film industry from South Africa and Burkina
Faso. They emphasized that African cinema had become a full-fledged participant in the
global dialogue.
The public program included roundtable discussions, master classes, and public talks
by African and Russian experts. Visitors were introduced to contemporary African street
art, design, and fashion. The festival became a platform for creative exchange,
strengthening cultural ties between Russia and African countries.
