Alicia Alonso’s legendary Giselle captivates Russian audiencesFrom 24 September to 3 October, the National Ballet of Cuba
From 24 September to 3 October, the National Ballet of Cuba toured four Russian cities. The company presented the legendary production of Giselle, featuring the choreography of the troupe’s founder, Alicia Alonso, on the stages of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the A. Pushkin Nizhny Novgorod Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the D. Shostakovich Samara Opera and Ballet Theatre.
The principal roles were performed by leading soloists of the Cuban troupe: company director Viengsay Valdés, Annette Delgado, Anyelo Montero, Dani Hernández, Ernesto Díaz, Gabriela Druyet, and Ana Pessino. The performances were accompanied by the symphony orchestras of the host theaters under the baton of Cuban conductor Idalgel Marquetti.
“The score of ‘Giselle’ is not technically complex in itself. I believe the challenge lies in the immense emotional intensity of the action. In our production, the key protagonists, among others, are emotions and feelings: love, betrayal, and forgiveness,” commented Idalgel Marquetti.
The tour is organized by the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Culture ROSCONCERT with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
