The National Ballet of Cuba to perform in Russia for the first time in nearly half a centuryOne of Latin America’s leading ballet companies will present Giselle in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, and Samara

The Russian tour of the National Ballet of Cuba will open on 24 September with a production of Giselle on the Historic Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, as part of the cultural program of the 12th St. Petersburg International Forum of United Cultures. The tour will continue on 27 September at the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and on 29 September at the A. Pushkin Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, concluding at the D. Shostakovich Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

The project will further develop Russian-Cuban cultural cooperation. The company’s founder, Alicia Alonso, was the first Latin American ballerina to perform in the USSR, and the Russian school of ballet had a fundamental impact on the shaping of the Cuban choreographic tradition.
