24 contestants took part in the I Round of the Piano category auditions, which was held from June 16 to 18 in the Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. They presented solo programs from the pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff and composers of his era. The jury consists of: Denis Matsuev (Chair of the jury), Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Viardo, Ta Quang Dong, Frederick Kempf, Liu Shi Kun, Maxim Mogilevsky, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Valery Pyasetsky, Vladimir Tropp.
