The first Rachmaninoff International competition will take place in Moscow in summer 2022.The first Rachmaninoff International for pianists, conductors and composers will take place between 14 and 27 June next year in three different locations.
During the conference in Saint Petersburg dedicated to the 150-year celebration of Rachmaninoff’s birthday, the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev who earlier presented the idea about the revival of the competition on a wider scale says: “The pianists will be in the Great Hall of Conservatory, the conductors will be in Tchaikovsky Hall, composers will be in the Philharmonia-2 in Rachmaninoff Concert Hall. Your humble servant will patronize the piano competition, Valery Abisalovich Gergiev will patronize the conductor competition, and Alexander Vladimirovich Tchaikovsky will patronize the composer competition”.
The plan is to broadcast the competition to a wide audience, including internationally. The competition programme and its regulation will be published shortly.
The Rachmaninoff competition will be held once every four years as well as the International P.I. Tchaikovsky competition. “One year is the Tchaikovsky competition, and in two years is Rachmaninoff competition, and then again in two years is Tchaikovsky competition” stated Denis Matsuev.
Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova was appointed as the chairman of the organizing committee of the competition. The committee includes Yury Bashmet, Valery Gergiev, Denis Matsuev, Valery Polyansky, Valery Pyasetsky, Sergey Roldugin, Vladimir Fedoseev as well as representatives of state agencies and cultural institutions.
As the State Secretary, the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Alla Manilova noted in an interview with journalists, Matsuev actively participated in planning the main events for Rachmaninoff’s jubilee. The Ministry formed it jointly with the leading musicians, historians, and representatives of the museum community.
On the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Sergey Rachmaninoff’s birthday will be held in Russia in 2023. The federal plan includes more than a hundred events that will be held in different cities of the country.
