The All-Russian Contest of Ballet Dancers and Choreographers was established by decree of the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Professor Yuriy Grigorovich, President of the International Union of Choreographers and the ballet-master of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, is the Artistic Director of the Contest.

The All-Russian Contest of Ballet Dancer and Choreographers follows the tradition of the All-Union Contest of Ballet Dancers and Ballet-Masters, which once opened a whole galaxy of outstanding dancers and ballet-masters to the world, including Nadezhda Pavlova, Genrikh Mayorov, Vladimir Vasilyev, Lyudmila Semenyaka, Vladimir Elizaryev, Vyacheslav Gordeev, and many others.

The first All-Union Contest of Ballet Dancers and Ballet-Masters was held in Moscow in 1965. Leonid Lavrovskiy, People’s Artist of the USSR, chaired the jury of the Contest. In different years, the jury of the Contest was chaired by such prominent ballet-masters and choreographers as People’s Artist of the USSR Igor Moiseev, People’s Artist of the USSR Yuriy Grigorovich, People’s Artist of the Russian SFSR Pyotr Gusev, People’s Artist of the USSR Sofya Golovkina.

Yuriy Grigorovich, an outstanding figure of contemporary ballet, initiated the idea of the revival of the All-Russian Contest of Ballet Dancers and Choreographers.

The first All-Russian Contest of Ballet Dancers and Choreographers was held from 2013 to 2016 in the following categories: Choreographers (2013), Character and Folk Stage Dance (2014), Contemporary Dance in the Musical Theatre (2015), Ballet Dancers (2016). The category Ballet Artists, which ended the cycle, became a qualifying stage of the XIII International Ballet Competition, which was held in the Bolshoi Theatre in June, 2017.

More than half a dozen of laureates and diploma winners of the All-Russian Contest of Ballet dancers and Choreographers participated in the XIII International Ballet Competition. Nikita Ksenofontov (Novosibirsk) was the winner of the Competition; Ekaterina Klyavlina (Moscow) was awarded the third prize and a bronze medal, and Denis Zakharov (Moscow) was awarded the first prize and a gold medal.

The II All-Russian Contest of Ballet Dancers and Choreographers was held from 2017 to 2020 in the following categories: Character and Folk Stage Dance (2017), Contemporary Dance in the Musical Theatre (2018), Choreographers (2019), Ballet Dancers (2020).

In 2021, a new cycle of the Contest in the category of Character and Folk Stage Dance was introduced.
